Missions

At First Baptist Church, Newport News, we are serious about “Engaging Our World” with the love and grace of Jesus. We engage God’s mission of love in our world through local and global partnerships.

Local Partnerships and Initiatives

Primera Iglesia Bautista, Newport News

Over fifteen years ago, we built upon a growing Hispanic ministry and started a Hispanic congregation. Today, our English and Spanish speaking church members help us serve, embrace and advocate for the needs of the Hispanic community on the Peninsula.

Peninsula Baptist Association
A group of Baptist churches on the Peninsula who partner together to support numerous mission endeavors. A current focus of this partnership is racial dialogue and friendship between black and white congregations.

THRIVE Peninsula
We partner with THRIVE because we share their passion for helping neighbors in need grow hopeful, self-sustaining lives. Find out more about THRIVE at http://thrivepeninsula.org.
CNU Ministry
Since our church values young adults, partnering with various ministries and sports teams at Christopher Newport University is important for us. We support Baptist Campus Ministry, Intervarsity, the football team and facilitate multiple connections between CNU and our congregation.
Food Bank, LINK & PORT

We host the Virginia Peninsula Mobile Food Bank in our parking lot on the second Thursday of each month. In addition, we participate in the winter PORT (People Offering Resources Together) ministry where homeless individuals are housed in our facilities one week per winter. PORT is one of the many programs of LINK, a non-profit organization on the Virginia Peninsula.

Yates Elementary School
As our across the street neighbor, we offer our support and love to the faculty, parents and students of Yates Elementary. To date, we have done campus beautification projects, held school supply drives, fed breakfast to the faculty, and provided backpacks and supplies for children in need. We look forward to the expansion of our partnership in the days ahead.

Global Partnerships and Initiatives

Baptist General Association of Virginia

Through our relationship with the BGAV, we partner with 1,400 other churches in 17 states and in other nations to do God’s work around the world. Our BGAV partnership also connects us with the mission work of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

Romania Partnership

For nearly 25 years, our church has partnered with Hungarian Pastor Veress Ernő and Camp Hargita, a Christian camp nestled in the Transylvania area of Romania.

For more information about our Romania partnership, contact staff@fbcnn.org.

Advent Conspiracy
Each year during the Christmas season, our church invests in the themes of the Advent Conspiracy: Worship fully, Spend less, Give more, Love all. By spending less on the “stuff” of Christmas, we invest in helping others who are in need. In 2015, as a result of Advent Conspiracy, we built six wells in Andhra Pradesh, India and helped THRIVE Peninsula retool their computer system. In 2018, we partnered with International Cooperating Ministries to build a church in Romania; collected donations of diapers and baby items for Alcove Health, a non-profit women’s clinic; and collected offerings for Lottie Moon with Southern Baptist Convention and Global Missions with Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
Short-term Mission Trips
We believe that done appropriately, short-term mission trips are a vital part of “Equipping Christ-Followers.” Every other year, our church engages in a short term mission trip to work with our partners in Romania. In July of 2017, a group from our church participated in a mission immersion experience with Iglesia Bautista Metropolis in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

If you would like more information about the Puerto Rico Mission experience, contact Juan Garcia jgarcia@fbcnn.org.
