About
First Baptist Church, Newport News began in 1881 and now exists as a growing group of Jesus followers who worship each Sunday in three services at our campus at the corner of Warwick and City Center Boulevards. Throughout our history, we have been faithful to God’s calling for us to serve the communities of the Virginia Peninsula and have responded to a changing community.
We are people, just like you, who have found hope, love and direction in a relationship with Jesus.
Our Mission
Embracing God,
Equipping Christ-followers,
Engaging Our World
We embrace God through corporate worship, personal prayer and worship, and through learning to experience God in our day to day circumstances.
We equip Christ-followers through excellent teaching, small group Bible studies, spiritual leadership development and the practice of servanthood.
We engage our world through servanthood, generosity, participation in mission actions in our community, investing in our neighbors and by participating in short-term mission experiences.
“The Three E’s” are the undergirding framework of our ministries and activity. They are our mission.
Our Beliefs
While our denomination claims certain core beliefs, we value diversity as our members interpret the Bible and listen for God’s voice in community with one another. Our core beliefs are represented by the Baptist Faith and Message Statement of 1963. Learn more here.
Our congregation also embodies other important values as we seek to fulfill our mission of Embracing God, Equipping Christ-Followers and Engaging Our World with the love of Jesus. Some of these core values include:
• Under the calling of the Holy Spirit, we ordain both men and women to serve as deacons and clergy.
• We value a variety of expressions and different forms of music in worship, which includes traditional and contemporary.
• We believe that growing to spiritual maturity is the normal expectation for every follower of Jesus.
• We believe every follower of Jesus is responsible for using his/her spiritual gifts to encourage other Jesus-followers and extend God’s grace and compassion to the world.
• We believe in relating to persons who are not followers of Jesus with listening and loving rather than judging.
